Тема сегодняшнего урока

 

Сломать голову над разбитым сердцем, или Влюбиться по самые пятки


Мы снова возвращаемся к идиомам, чтобы в очередной раз убедиться что, во-первых, они неисчерпаемы, а во-вторых, что они делают наш язык богаче и выразительнее. Сегодня возьмемся за фразы, в которых встречаются части тела. Помните, как по-русски мы скажем «выплакать все глаза», «выбросить из головы» или  «приложить ум» вместо пресных «сильно расстраиваться», «перестать думать» и «догадаться». В английском языке почти все то же самое, имея в виду смысл фраз.

Давайте поднатужимся (опять идиома!), приложим весь ум, какой есть и вставим в предложения подходящие по смыслу части тела (eye, eyes, nose, chest, head, head, back, mind, heart, arm, heels, feet) так, чтобы получились правильные идиомы:

  1. Doctor, there's something I need to get off my ________. (to talk abt smth I have been worrying or thinking about).
  2. I don't know what's wrong with the boss today. I only asked a question and she bit my ____off! (answered in a very angry way)
  3. We weren't really arguing until Denis came along and decided to stick his _____ in.
  4. I can't possibly meet you for lunch today. I'm up to my ______in work at the moment.
  5. As she walked up the aisle towards Barry, Linda started to get cold ______(became afraid of).
  6. When John left me for another woman, he broke my _____.
  7. I have to sit near the water's edge so I can keep an _____on my little daughter swimming.
  8. Oh all right, I'll come and watch this movie with you. You've twisted my ________ (forced or persuaded).
  9. I fell _____ over ______ in love with her the moment I saw her, but she doesn't want to know me.
  10. As I walked away, I could hear them whispering about me behind my _____.
  11. He was in the shop for ages because he couldn't make up his _____ which T-shirt to buy.

Ну, как - тяжело в ученьи? Теперь в бой - будет легче! Замените слово или фразу, выделенные жирным шрифтом, одной из идиом из списка ниже, изменив местоимения, формы глаголов и т.д., где нужно.

Например,

It would make me very sad if anything happened to my cat. = It would break my heart if anything happened to my cat.

have/get cold feet                                  head over heels in love              behind sb's back

twist sb's arm                                        break sb's heart                         keep an eye on sb/sth

poke/stick your nose in(to sth)             get sth off your chest                 bite sb's head off

be up to your eyes in sth                       make up your mind

Не забудьте, что have, get,  be, stick, break, make, keep bite -  неправильные глаголы! Подсказка: bite - bit - bitten.

  1. Could you watch my bags for me while I go into the shop, please?
  2. The way we bring up the children is our business; I don't want your mother interfering!
  3. Linda and Barry are both still crazy about each other even after five years. 
  4. He was going to report it to the police, but at the last minute he felt too scared and decided to keep quiet.
  5. Why not tell him how you feel? It might do you good to talk about it.
  6. Sue says she's too busy to come to the party tonight. See if you can persuade her.
  7. You'll just have to decide which one you want. I'm not waiting any longer!
  8. When I asked him what he wanted to eat, he just shouted at me.
  9. It's not fair of us to discuss Jo's work without her knowing about it.
  10. We're so busy because we've just moved house and we have got loads of boxes that need unpacking.
